“There is no Sleepy Hollow on the Internet, no peaceful spot where contemplativeness can work its restorative magic. There is only the endless, mesmerizing buzz of the urban street.” Nicholas Carr, from The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains (New York: Norton, 2010)

In regards to the aesthetic appreciation of sound, I feel that sound is very important in terms of engagement with the natural environment. I believe that to be fully immersed in your surroundings, one must be vulnerable and open to the environment they are in. Technology such as headphones only create barriers to the appreciation of nature. One is unable to take in their full surroundings, because nature's sound is being blocked. If one wants to truly engage themselves in nature to get the full appreciation, they need to be open and aware of the sounds that nature creates, such as the crinkling of the leaves, the chirping of the birds, the buzzing of the insects and everything else that nature entails. Opening your ears will only support the beauty and aesthetic appreciation granted by your eyes.
