“There is no Sleepy Hollow on the Internet, no peaceful spot where contemplativeness can work its restorative magic. There is only the endless, mesmerizing buzz of the urban street.” Nicholas Carr, from The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains (New York: Norton, 2010)

Soundscapes in the everyday environment
The movie August Rush gives excellent examples of soundscapes in both natural and urban environments. The main character of the movie composes music based on the sounds he hears around him. His compositions reflect the complexity of sounds in our everyday environments as they blend and clash. This final song from the movie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbafIbcO7m8) is a culmination of August's work. I love this song because many of the sounds in the piece are recognizable as sounds we hear every day. There are a variety of instruments used, both traditional and unique, that bring a soundscape to a stage. The natural harmonies and dissonance that are found in all soundscapes reflect the toil of the plot of the movie. The same way in which soundscapes reflect the ecology of the natural landscape, this song encompasses the adventure and heartache felt by the characters.
