“There is no Sleepy Hollow on the Internet, no peaceful spot where contemplativeness can work its restorative magic. There is only the endless, mesmerizing buzz of the urban street.” Nicholas Carr, from The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains (New York: Norton, 2010)

After researching the aesthetics of preservation, it really made me conscious of the appropriateness of preserved areas. The goal of preservationists is to preserve areas that are seen as pristine to save their aesthetic value from destruction. With this being said, it is problematic due to the simple fact that the Earth is no longer pristine. In regards to the views of positive aesthetics and nature being the most beautiful untouched, this is no longer an accurate model to be used. All nature has been influenced or changed in some aspects due to human creation. In which, should nature in its current state continue to be influenced by humans through preservation? Won't saving nature from it's own natural forces be seen as artificial as opposed to natural? These questions make you wonder the true aesthetic values of preservation.
